Director Minoru Kawasaki has made many special effects comedies such The Calamari Wrestler (2004), Executive Koala (2005), and The Rug Cop (2006), and he turns his attention to the popular fictional person “Isshin Tasuke,” a fishmonger who embodies the values of giri and ninjo. He updates the legend for the modern era and inserts science fiction action. The film was produced to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the merger of the towns and villages of Kota, Aichi Prefecture.
Synopsis: Isshin Tasuke is the 25th generation head of Isshin-ya Fresh Fish Store in Koda Town, Aichi Prefecture. He is also an office worker and all-round nice guy who always helps those in need. One day, Tasuke is shot by a mysterious assailant but is revived by a genius scientist in a secret laboratory and given a cybernetic body. Now known as “Cyborg Isshin Tasuke,” he must discover the true face of his rivals…

Synopsis: This is a sequel to a 2011 documentary about “Team Orihime,” a relay team made up of women in their late fifties and sixties who participated in the swim across the English channel. You can see where they are in rankings terms here but their relay took 14 minutes, which is impressive. 13 years have elapsed since then and life has sent waves of tragedies and disasters like deaths and illnesses, natural disasters, and Covid but swimming has gotten them through life and a new generation has experienced the joy of camaraderie. The documentary covers nearly 13 years and shows how swimming has become so important to so many members of Team Orihime.

This film was made by people who live in the city of Mitaka, on the eastern side of Tokyo, in response to the demolition of a pedestrian bridge crossing over the railroad tracks between Mitaka Station and Musashi Sakai Station on the JR Chuo Line. It’s a place associated with Osamu Dazai, who used to live nearby – why read my writing when some cute kids in Tokyo can introduce it to you in this video!
Synopsis: There is an old pedestrian bridge over the Chuo line in Mitaka that is due to be removed. Over the years it has quietly watched over the various people in the area. One such person is Wataru Imahashi (nice play on bridge, there 今橋), a 45-year-old bachelor living in the town whose family is falling apart after his parents separated and his mother turned to alcohol. Even Wataru girlfriend is on the verge of collapse. Once a manga artist, she tried drugs and has been plagued by hallucinations ever since. It is down to Wataru and his younger sister Miyu to hold things together. As the demolition of the bridge approaches, their lives intersect there.

It has fairly well-known directors attached to it like Ken Ninomiya (Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro Slumpolis), Tatsuya Yamanishi (Mari and Mari), Shinji Araki (The Town of Headcounts, Penalty Loop)
Synopsis: Ken Ninomiya’s story follows a man who is invited to his fiancée’s where he is introduced to her former boyfriend… Tatsuya Yamanishi’s story involves a young man who cares for his nearly bedridden mother. Shinji Araki’s story is one of a wife observing her husband after noticing that his behaviour and personality are undergoing changes…

This film was made to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the magical-girl genre parody franchise and it features a time travel story.
Synopsis: The pink Wombat dude aims to travel from a thousand years in the future to the “love singularity point” — the year 2015 (the setting of the first series of the anime) but he ends up arriving in 2025. Battle Lovers gather again to fight against Death Amor, who has no love.
