I’ve been busy with festival work so haven’t had the chance to watch many films aside from two on YouTube One day of Mayor Fukuyama and Tokyo Poltergeist.

The Macross anime was first broadcast from 1982 to 1983. This movie is based on the TV version but the development of details and the ending are different from the TV version.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, there will be a new 4K remastered Blu-ray disc set of film on January 29, 2025 and it will  start playing in 40 Japanese cinemas on January 25.

Synopsis: In the year 1999, a huge spaceship crashes on Earth from outer space, confirming the existence of alien life. In preparation for a possible war with aliens, humanity refurbishes the spaceship and builds the giant space battleship Macross. Humanity is then caught up in a war between alien races and a romance develops between a pilot, a singer named Lynn Minmay, and his commanding officer Misa Hayase amongst the battles. Somehow, an ancient song and Lynn Minmay’s singing can dictate the course of the war.

When I interviewed Akiyoshi Koba for his musical comedy film Nunchaku and Soul, I asked what type of film he’d love to make and he said a Mad Max-like title was one. Since then, he has made a whole suite of sci-fi action/sentai/detective titles like Psychic Z and Esper X Detective Agency: Sayonara no Sasashimono  that have increased in budget and style.

Time Machine Girl is his latest and it features idols like Rin Kaname of Denpagumi.inc, a professional wrestler Yuka Yasukawa. They are led by Utano Aoi, an up-and-coming actress who has appeared in the film Red Bridge (2022) and Momoha Takatsuru, an idol, a ballerina, model, and an actor who has appeared in City Hunter

Synopsis: Kako is an office worker who gets into an accident that leads to her developing the peculiar physical condition of rewinding time by a few minutes every time she is startled and taking the person who startled her along for the ride. Due to this, she tries to avoid interacting with others but her goofy co-worker, Chizuru, often makes Kako time slip. Soon enough, others cotton on and try to take advantage of Kako.

Sahel Rosa is an actor but she steps behind the camera for this project, an experimental film that blends documentary and fiction to tell a story about young people growing up in an orphanage.

The cast are young people who actually experienced growing up in that environment and the film also features Koichi Sato, a big-name actor who has also participated in a foster care programme in his private life.

Music is provided by Sarah Alain, an Australian musician, and the film was executive produced by Shunji Iwai.

Synopsis: Eight youths who grew up in an orphanage, each of whom have who had unusual experiences during their childhood and adolescence, retrace their memories and perform these unforgettable moments in front of the camera. The filmmakers try to trace and express these fragments of their memories and, thus, reveal a darkness in Japan that some children face and the ray of light that they, the who experienced the darkness, see in their own lives.

An omnibus film centred on the theme of mothers, all by directors and writers who are currently working in the industry. Names that have cropped up on this blog are Remi Noda (Manga-ka, Hori Mamoru, the NDJC film Hikari wa doko ni aru) and Nozumu Namba (Ossan’s Blues) among others.

Synopsis: Hisashi Takeda’s film depicts the struggle of a mother with a son who has committed indiscriminate assaults; Ikuko Takahashi’s film is based on a ghost story about a child-rearing ghost; Mayumi Kiuchi’s film is a suspense film about the sorrow of a daughter who has a controlling; Reimi Noda’s film is a comedy about reflection on parenting set during Christmas, and Nozomu Namba’s film is about loss and rebirth of a mother bereaved of a daughter.

Rio Yamashita (Asako I & II, Ribbon) takes the lead role and is supported by the likes of Ryo Ishibashi (Audition), Ayame Goriki (Black Butler), Fusaku Urabe (Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy). The Hip-Hop music is provided by DARTHREIDER.

This is the theatrical film directorial debut of Naoya Kusaba, who won both the PFF Award 2019 Nikkatsu Award and the HORIPRO Award for Super Mikincorinista (JFDB)

Synopsis: Yukiko is about to turn 30 and is stuck at an impasse. To be specific, she struggle to communicate and is anxious about her future. Whether it is talking to the students at her elementary school or responding to her boyfriend’s proposal of marriage. She thinks she can only express her true feelings when she is performing her favourite rap song, but when she unexpectedly participates in a rap battle, she is left standing there wordless. Yukiko asks herself what she wants to be…
