This is going to be a crazy week since I have non-stop writing to do with reviews but I figure that I’ve done my last festival preview with Tokyo FILMeX. I’m gonna go for a new job so my hours will change and I’m wondering how my days will shake out.

Nairu Yamamoto is having something of a moment considering she is in quite a few films this year, including On a Boat and Inch Forward and Super Happy Forever. She may be the lead in the latter film but here she is part of an ensemble drama that takes place during the Covid-19 pandemic/Olympics.

Synopsis: It is the time of the Olympics and the people staying at the Coco guesthouse build personal connections with each other. Utako, a live-in part-time worker, leads a modest but fulfilling life with Hirofumi, the owner and a former traveller, and Izumi, who is addicted to distributing life-hack videos on SNS. They meet various young people who will be addressing issues in their lives, including Utako, who has  run away from her hometown for a reason.

Synopsis: BanG Dream! is a mixed media project that has girl bands depicted in anime, games, and real-life performances by voice actors. They will include some new footage, the second film in particular, as it will screen with a new “Film Live” sequence.

Synopsis: Sakuya Ishikawa lives with his mother Akiko and works at a factory. He had thought she was happy but, one day, she calls him and says she needs to talk to him about something important. As he rushes through a storm, he sees her near a swollen river, attempts to reach her and is injured. He wakes up a year later to find that his mother has passed away, having chosen to “die free”  and that the factory where he worked is now shut down. Sakuya tries to start life anew and takes a job at VF (virtual figure) technology company, a place that makes digital avatars of people. Sakuya soon asks for one of his mother in order to learn what her true intentions were on the day she called him. To create her, Sakuya must gather information and to do that, he tracks down his mother’s best friend, who is living in a shelter due to typhoon damage, and decides to live with her and his mother’s VF.

Director Yusuke Morii made his feature debut with the critically-acclaimed film Amiko. His latest is a road movie with an original story inspired by the poetry of Taichi Nakao.

Synopsis: Noriko is a lonely woman living in Tottori and working as a cleaner. She struggles to communicate with others but when she is asked by an inpatient at a hospital to bring her daughter Haru, she embarks on a road journey and sets off for Himeji to collect the girl. As Noriko and Hal travel along Route 29 between Himeji and Tottori, the two meet meet people and bond with each other, and Noriko’s empty heart is filled with emotions.

She hears from Naoki’s best friend why Naoki avoids girls and vows to continue to love him. Meanwhile, Akoko’s best friend since elementary school, Mitsuki, is also interested in Naoki.
