Happy weekend, people!

I am still pushed for time and it’s going to be a regular thing for a while because I am going to embark on some travels. That means the trailer posts are going to suffer a lack of information and some bad translations. My apologies. I will fix these at a later date. I do go back through old festival posts and replace trailers that have disappeared/update things so I will try and get around to doing it to these trailer posts.

This week, I have posted about “Destruction Babies” (2016) and the tragic passing of the great actor, Ren Osugi.

What is released this weekend?

Here’s a list of films chronicling the Great East Japan Earthquake. I really need to resurrect it and fill in missing entries. Also creating a fiction/non-fiction list would be helpful.

Japanese Films at the Osaka Asian Film Festival 2018

The team behind the Osaka Asian Film Festival has released the entire programme of films that will play at this year’s edition and it’s a mighty cinematic feast spread across a Competition and programmes dedicated to Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, and other territories from elsewhere across Asia as well as Special Screenings, an Indie Forum, and films supported by the Housen Foundation.

These films cover a huge range of stories from dramas involving people finding karate giving meaning to their lives, to a melancholy animated title about dogs to Taiwan. There are lots of fantastic Japanese short films and box-office hits and an appearance from Hong Kong’s king of comedy, Chapman To. He is the recipient of the Osaka Asia Star Award and will be at the festival to talk about his career. A new talent on the American indie-scene, Kogonoda, will get his film screened at the festival and there are up-and-coming female directors from Asia. More pertinently, there is a whole slew of fantastic Japanese indie films that have some of the best drama and settings. Most if not all of these films have English subs which makes this festival the best place in Japan to see films.

The entire programme and all details, times, and dates are online at the festival’s site and tickets are already on sale. Here is a preview covering the Japanese films:

The Osaka Asian Film Festival opens on Friday March 9th at Hankyu Umeda Hall with the Japanese premiere of the Korean film “Anarchist from the Colony”, directed by Lee Joon-ik (“The Throne” and “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet”). The Closing Film is the Word Premiere of Akihiro Toda’s “THE NAME (名前)” which will play at the ABC Hall on Sunday, March 18th.

In between the opening and closing films there are many sections:

COMPETITION

This section will present 15 films chosen from films completed on or after 1st October 2016 and unreleased in Japan. There will be a team of international jurors will choose the winners of the Grand Prix and Most Promising Talent Award.

There are a variety of films here from all across Asia with protest and romance films from Hong Kong and the Philippines, a revenge drama set in 80s Taiwan full of lust and land-grabs that result in murder and an animated film about dogs and their owners from Taiwan and so much more. There are many highlights but I’m interested in the Japanese and American film on the bill.

Bad Poetry Tokyo      Bad Poetry Tokyo Film Poster

Running Time: 114 mins.

Release Date: 2018

Director: Anshul Chauhan

Writer: Anshul Chauhan, Rand Colter (Screenplay), Anshul Chauhan (Original Story)

Starring: Shuna Iijima, Orson Mochizuki, Takashi Kawaguchi, Nana Blank, Kohei Mashiba, Kento Furukoshi,

Website    IMDB

“Bad Poetry Tokyo” looks to be a stunning human drama with a style reminiscent of “The Light Shines Only There” (2014). It looks like it is lead by a powerful performance from lead actress Shuna Iijima who has to deal with heavy issues but the style suggests it is done with a grace.

Synopsis: Jun Fujita is 30 years old. She majored in English at Tokyo University. That is the lie she tells people when she applies for acting jobs. In reality, she works as a hostess at a shady club. Life hasn’t turned out the way she wanted when she escaped home back in Nagano Prefecture five years ago. Still, she dreams of being an actress and is about to touch her dream when she is betrayed by her lover and things go wrong at the club. Broken and made savage by the experience, she heads back to her sleepy hometown in the countryside to lick her wounds. Things haven’t changed much there and she reconnects with an old flame but there are ugly truths about her past that lurk beneath the surface …

The next film is American but it looks super special.

Columbus    Columbus Film Poster

Running Time: 114 mins.

Release Date: August 04th, 2017

Director: Kogonada

Writer: Kogonada (Screenplay)

Starring: John Cho, Haley Lu Richardson, Parker Posey, Rory Culkin, Eren Allegretti,

IMDB

The word about this indie film is strong. Director Kogonoda began life as an academic and video essayist covering the likes of Yasujiro Ozu and Richard Linklater. He then decided to pick up the camera to make this film. Inspired by themes in the works of Yasujiro Ozu and modernist architecture, Kogonada’s film is a visual tour de force that combines the two, taking the location and using visual design to an exacting degree to create an environment, splendid to see, full of a wealth of characters given depth to their relationships as we see their troubles, complexities and growth and it all hinges upon the architecture of the town of Columbus, Indiana.

Synopsis: Prepare to take a trip to Columbus, Indiana, a small mid-western town famous for its Modernist structures designed by I.M. Pei, John Carl Warnecke, and Richard Meier. It is here that a Richard Linklater-like drama unfolds between two strangers, both of whom are architecture buffs.

Korean-American Jin arrives in town to look after his estranged father after the respected architecture professor falls into a coma. While there, he runs into Casey, a librarian looking after a troubled mother instead of pursuing her own dreams. The two slowly form a connection and through each other and find a way to build a new lives.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS

Again, there are lots of films here including what seems to be a political comedy set in the jungle of one of India’s out of the way states where Maoists are trying to derail a democratic vote. That one looks worth seeing. There are two films of note for the J-film fan, both are views of Japan from a foreigner’s perspective.

Writer: Akio Fujimoto (Screenplay)

IMDB Website

Japanese film-makers have built an impressive catalogue of titles that depict the effects of disaster and tragedy on children. Filmed with social realist style and with fantastic performances from untrained child actors, “Passage of Life” presents the uncomfortable reality of life as a refugee in Japan.

Fujimoto, a first-time feature film director, worked with non-professional actor and their efforts ensured the film won the Spirit of Asia Award, given by the Japan Foundation Asia Center at last year’s Tokyo International Film Festival.

Synopsis: “Passage of Life” is based on reality and shows the lives of a Burmese family that immigrated to Japan with no visa. Khin and her husband Issace have an uncertain home with their two boys, 7-year-old Kaung and his younger brother Htet. The boys were raised in Japan and are happy. Their parents are not.

Without the proper paperwork, a secure life is impossible and all hope lies with obtaining political refugee status which seems impossible to get in Japan. However, the stress is too much for Khin who is hospitalised with depression. She decides to take the kids back to Burma which is when the film switches focus to depict the inner struggles of Kaung who struggles with a great change in his environment and longs for the place he calls home: Japan.

Japan and Korea don’t always have the best diplomatic relations but the recent Winter Olympics and a whole bunch of films see creatives and sportspeople unite. This film sees the two nations work together thanks to music as friendship sprouts between Korean directors and Japanese actors.

Shot in many neighbourhoods in Osaka and featuring Japanese and Korean artists such as Lucid Fall, Soul Cry, Kandu, Lee Jong-on, and Hero-Sway, the film looks to have a lively and lovely soundtrack and pleasant characters who are a joy to be around. This is an excellent example of how a film and a festival can unite two countries. SS06_WoozooBeAlright

Synopsis: When his boss Daejung goes missing in a ship accident, the company sends Woozoo to Osaka to finish his business. On his last day in the city, Woozoo chases someone who looks exactly like Daejung to Taisho, an area in Osaka. He ends up losing him, but the sound of a guitar draws Woozoo to a small bar, Pier 34. Its owner, Snou, somehow reminds him of Daejung, and listening to his music brings back memories. After passing out right there, Woozoo ends up missing his flight back to Korea. He quits his job on a whim and soon meets Haruna, who is learning how to play the guitar from Snou. Woozoo decides to stay at Pier 34 until he finds Daejung and so begins an unlikely vacation for him.

INDIE FORUM

This special gem
was originally part of the omnibus movie “Kuruibana” (2017) but has taken on a life of its own and it is filled with shocks and fantastic style. This has to be one of the highlights of the festival. Director Noriko Yuasa has used inventive sound and visual design to create what looks to be a great thriller!

Synopsis: Mr Tsuda is a handsome teacher who is coaching a dance club. Concerned about one injured member, Ami, he visits her home in the middle of Tokyo. What he finds is a bright and bubbly schoolgirl with a seemingly perfect family living an idealised ordinary everyday life. She lives in a well-furnished home with Kanako, her lovely-looking mother, and Sho, her cute brother. Ami’s father is missing but nobody talks about him.

Everyone has smiles on their faces. Tsuda finds the mother’s smile is especially inviting and pretty soon his thoughts start straying to parent-teacher relations. What he doesn’t realise is that this is a two-faced family who lead anything but a very ordinary life.

The Path Leading to Love

Release Date: 2018

Director: Kohei Takayama

Writer: Kohei Takayama (Screenplay),

Starring: Ippei Tanaka, Yumi Mukai, Mika Dehara, Suzuka Minagawa, Koichi Sakaguchi,

The word minimalist could be used with this trailer. There are no big dramatics and with a combination of subdued but powerful lighting and set design, one character’s battle with alcoholism will be powerfully told through encounters with the human wreckage he leaves behind.

Synopsis: Shosuke could be a promising manga artist but his alcoholism pushes away his desire to work. It also pushed away his ex-girlfriend Sawako and threatens his relationship with his current partner Yasuko. Perhaps it is an escape from a deeper question he has: whether love is real or not. Haunted by his failings with these two women, he drifts along in life but when he gets a call from his sister in his home town that their mother is ill, Shosuke must confront whether the questions and problems he has are all an excuse for his selfishness. Perhaps the potential absence of the ones who care for him will force him to walk a path leading to love…

Writer: Masa Asanishi, Akira Ito (Screenplay), Inuhiko Yomota ‘Eizo Yori’ (Original Novel),

Starring: Masanobu Ando, Natsuko Haru, Rima Matsuda, Vivienne Sato, Kiyomi Ito, Inuhiko Yomota,

IMDB

Hitoshi Yazaki will probably be most familiar to Westerners for his last film, “A Cappella” which appeared at places like Nippon Connection and Japan Cuts. I first encountered him with this clip for “March Comes in Like a Lion” (1991):

He is an indie veteran whose return is being greeted with anticipation and his latest film will get people hot under the collar since it is all about a photography shoot which may, or may not, be erotic. It is inspired by Henri Maccheroni’s scandalous relationship with his lover/muse which became the collection of work, ‘Cent photographies choisies dans la serie Deux mille photographies du sexe d’une femme’.

Synopsis: Haruma is an up-and-coming photographer who is getting full exposure at a photo exhibition in a Tokyo photo gallery. Rei, a beautiful curator at the Yamanashi Prefectural Art Museum, is fascinated by the photos she sees and calls Haruma to request a photo-shoot with an intimate part of herself as the subject. The only rules to this shoot are that no questions must be asked and Rei will be given the negatives. Haruma is initially surprised but goes along with the job, however, Haruma’s pregnant girlfriend Natsuki grows frustrated over being kept in the dark about their work and jealousy develops in their relationship as passions blow up.

CYCLE-CYCLE Dir: Junichi Kanai, 18 mins, 2017 This is a comedy about two high school boys who start a bicycle trip around Japan on a tandem before splitting up. Release Date: 2018

Director: Umi Ishihara

Writer: Umi Ishihara (Screenplay),

Starring: Yukari Shinomiya, Kaori Takeshita, Kiyoshiro Ishida, Yu Suzumura,

Umi Ishihara is an artist whose award-winning work has been featured around the world from Brazil to Australia and Japan. Some words straight from her website:

The major themes of her work centre around love, personal memories and society. Her work adopts a mix of documentary and fiction, muddying the waters of believability.”

The trailer looks punkish and her themes are perfect fodder for drama.

Nina Endo, one of the stars of Daisuke Miyazaki’s last film “Yamato (California)” takes the lead once again with SUMIRE, a popular fashion model and the daughter of Tadanobu Asano. They look like they make a cute double-act allowing Miyazaki to show an unseen side of urban Singapore not often witnessed by tourists. The trailer has a weird other-wordly feel to it thanks to the music and there’s a slight documentary feel thanks to direct to camera interviews.

Synopsis: Nina and Su live uninspiring lives in Yamato City, Kanagawa Prefecture but when the two best friends win a free trip abroad, a different locale might usher in some excitement. They use their tickets to head to Singapore, a cosmopolitan city not too different from Japan. At first, the girls travel around famous sightseeing spots on a typical itinerary, but when Nina loses her smartphone, she finds true freedom as she explores unfamiliar places, sees unfamiliar sights, and hears unfamiliar sounds. Her unforgettable adventure in Singapore starts.

IMDB           Website

Yosuke Takeuchi is something of an artist and his story was inspired by elements from his own life such as a niece with special needs and his thoughts on how society treats people who are different. His biggest inspiration, however, is the life of Vincent van Gogh and how the artist lived a humble and naive life to the full. That story is reflected in one of the main characters, the titular “Sower”.

Reviews for this paint an incredibly strong drama.

Synopsis: Mitsuo was one of those brave souls who answered the call for volunteers to clear out the debris left behind by the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. The strain of the task proved to be too much and he spent three years in psychiatric care. Upon his release, Mitsuo finds solace in reuniting with his brother and his nieces Chie and Itsuki. But a tragic accident soon disrupts the newly found happiness when the two girls are left in his care and Itsuki is killed. Though he had no direct involvement in the incident, Mitsuo is blamed and this causes him and the people around him to deal with the burden of guilt and the struggle for atonement.

The trailer for “Kushina” shows a visually and aurally beautiful drama which is just fantastic to look at. The story has elements of feminism that offers a vision of an idealised community with doses of realism over the workings of the world and gender relations to provide tension as we see whether a female-only community fragments or not and what will happen to the titular character.

Synopsis: Deep in the mountains, hidden in a forest, there is a village populated only by women who ran away from home to commit suicide in the area. It was founded by Onikuma, a strong-willed yet kind-hearted mother and village head-woman who fled from the city with her daughter, Kagu who was 14-years-old and pregnant with the titular Kushina.

Kagu is now 28 and Kushina is 14.She was born and raised in a very simple, sparse and isolated environment where the women they live with survive off the land and harvest cannabis to sell to the outside world. This contact is mediated by Onikuma who protects the place and all who dwell in it. All is well until an anthropologist named Soko Kazano and her male assistant Keita discover the village. Their presence causes disruption and promises the change all of their lives forever.

Girl Returned Dir: Satoru Hirohara, 44 mins, 2017deals with what could be quite a horrific situation as it tells the story of 15-year-old Misaki Fujino who was kidnapped when she was out jogging and held imprisoned in the apartment of a man for two years. Following her rescue by the police, she is allowed back to her home but the experience has left her not knowing what to do except go out jogging again. The film goes to lengths to show the impact of the crime on the girl and her family and those who were connected to her and offers audiences a realistic and maybe hopeful resolution because life carries on and one must not be beaten down.

Love and Other Cults   Love and Other Cults Film Poster

獣道 「Kemonomichi

Running Time: 95 mins

Release Date: March 26th, 2018

Director:  Eiji Uchida

Writer: Eiji Uchida (Screenplay),

Starring: Sairi Ito, Kenta Suga, Kaito Yoshimura, Hidenobu Abera, Antony, Denden, Hanae Kan, Leona Hirota, Tomoko Hayakawa,

Website IMDB

Not every romance is clean and tidy but the latest film from Eiji Uchida, director of Greatful Dead (2014) and Lowlife Love (2016) is the messiest and grimiest one you will see without Takashi Miike levels of gore and craziness involved. This story of star-crossed lovers is, however, everyday crazy as we see the lowest of Japanese society try and claw their way out of small town criminality and exploitation.

The film’s central couple are Ai (Sairi Itoh) and Ryota (Kenta Suga). The two meet in school and sparks start flying almost immediately but their passion is of the confrontational kind where arguments flare up. Unable to recognise love or express it, they part ways and meet up again at various points in their lives. The reason for their fractious relationship is that neither has had a stable home. We get Ai’s story for the most part and glimpses of Ryota’s while he also offers narration over the entire film which acts like a Greek chorus summing up what has gone wrong for the characters. Indeed, Ai’s story is one of constant tragedy and a search for a family.

She gets off to an inauspicious start thanks to a religious-maniac mother who sticks her in a cult and then she lands with a gang of drug-users and high-school dropouts. Things get better with a traditional nuclear family before she loses things again. Throughout every “family”, she is exploited in some way but she also tries to exploit her own gifts to remain part of the fabric of other people’s lives, whether it is by physical means or a talent such as cooking. When her character uses her physicality, it speaks of how her sense of self and her position in society are warped from previous encounters. From the get-go, she uses pain to attract attention and, when she grows old enough and has been groomed by others, she sees her physical body as a vessel to find happiness.

While she bounces around different environments, Ryota follows a similar path as he falls in with a gang of wannabe yakuza only he is never sexualised to the extent that Ai is. He is physically brutalised which is shown in unglamorous fight scenes where everyday objects are utilised as weapons or fists and kicks are the preferred method of beating someone. Initially adding doses of comedy as dull characters get struck, the film builds in seriousness as the world of gangs gets explored. The constant throughout everything is that what Ai goes through is a sexual hazing that is unpleasant to watch but the most troubling fate is handed to Reika (Hanae Kan), an underwater photographer, who is punished for dating Kenta (Anthony), the leader of Ryota’s gang. Her treatment and ending is disappointing especially because her relationship with Kenta acts as an interesting and more hopeful counterpoint to Ai and Ryota’s and the two have a good chemistry together which takes the film out of the filth for just a moment.

Overall, while the physical surroundings of the characters are a believably miserable mess, Eiji Uchida’s writing is skilful enough to show its emotional impact as he orchestrates a large number of character arcs neatly and efficiently. No scene or sequence drags and every second counts for something and every story seems to reach a natural conclusion with doses of black humour from the character interactions and individual’s quirks. The sprightly rhythm and quirky humour make the film slightly less darker than Eiji Uchida’s earlier works such as “Grateful Dead” and “Lowlife Love” and there is a little hope as we see a generation of kids coping with exploitation and betrayals from their elders and pushing through.

This film represents a look into the under-seen side of Japan and it’s low-budget grungy nature gives it an uncomfortable set of circumstances but a fresh down-at-heel vibe as small city Japan is put on screen and the characters venture around those less-than nice areas tucked away from the main roads and shotengai that surround JR stations. Cinematography is by Maki Ito who has worked on Sion Sono’s latest films and the lensing and camerawork is stable, crisp, and controlled and the fact it mostly takes place during bright sunny days changes the atmosphere. There are even beautiful shots such as a trip to Mount Fuji and Reika and Kenta and their experiences diving. The visuals also allow the viewer to pick out sight gags left by set-designers such as calligraphy and graffiti with words and phrases tied to themes of the film and, most importantly, the actors giving good performances.

“Love and Other Cults” actually works as a great partner for “Destruction Babies” as a way of showing the grimier side of Japanese society done via low-budget film-makers. Uchida’s film stands out for its sunnier disposition thanks to its central heroine.

Happy Weekend, People!

IF14_WhoKnowsAboutMyLife

This is my first trailer post from Japan. The last time I was in the country, I didn’t have the time or energy to do them because of constant activity but good experiences and good people motivated me to get back into the game and it has been fun putting this one together. After this is posted, I will head out to explore some cities. And write. I made the mistake of catching a train at rush hour last night and got stuck in a corner, desperately writing review notes with my pen and pad while I travelled back to my room.

I have had a busy week since getting here but spent the weekend prepping reviews for the upcoming Osaka Asian Film Festival. I posted an article about the Japanese films that will be playing and I’m looking forward to seeing what is on offer. My second post was a review of “Love and Other Cults” (2017) which is released on DVD/Blu-ray in the UK on March 26th by Third Window Films.

What is released this weekend in Japan?

Before We Vanish (English Title) / Strolling Invader (Literal Title)  Before We Vanish Film Poster

Running Time: 129 mins.

Release Date: September 09th , 2017

Director:  Kiyoshi Kurosawa

Writer: Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Screenplay), Tomohiro Maekawa (Original Stageplay),

Starring: Ryuhei Matsuda, Masami Nagasawa, Mahiro Takasugi, Yuri Tsunematsu, Hiroki Hasegawa,

Website IMDB

Kiyoshi Kurosawa is often pigeon-holed as a horror director with ghosts lurking in the darkness but his latest title, Before We Vanish is his first alien invasion movie and features the threat in broad daylight. Based on a stageplay by Tomohiro Maekawa which was first performed in 2005, this film appeared at last year’s Cannes Film Festival and has had a dorama spin-off. A glib comparison might be Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as aliens travel to Earth and take human hosts but in this chat-pocalypse the tension is dialled down for a surprisingly effective examination of what it means to be human with surprising results that may or may not stop the end of humanity.

Somewhere in Shizuoka, freelance designer Narumi (Masami Nagasawa) and her salaryman husband Shinji Kase (Ryuhei Matsuda) are having problems of the marital sort. He is suspected of cheating and has recently disappeared so when Narumi is summoned to a hospital to pick him up she is furious. However, the man facing her in the doctor’s office seems like a totally different person, a blank slate with vague memories of his life and a problem knowing how to navigate social situations and even use his body properly. Things learned over time have been shorn away from him including the basic meaning behind various ideas such as possession, family, and love. He wants to learn these things and so he asks Narumi to be his guide. When she isn’t around, he likes to go for a walk and talk to random people and get their understanding of a situation or word. What happens next reveals his alien nature as he engages in a game of word association. He gently questions people until he actually sees the ideas visually forming in their head and, once that happens, he touches the person’s forehead and plucks the idea away, learning a new concept while erasing it from the speaker. Sinec he’s an alien, it is how he learns what makes humans work.

Before We Vanish Film Image

After so many relationship problems, Narumi is surprised by her kinder and gentler man who tries to understand her more. What she doesn’t know is that she has the easier alien to deal with.

Across town, a brutal murder of a family has been committed with dismembered limbs and viscera everywhere. A trail of bloody chaos leads to a school girl named Akira Tachibana (Yuri Tsunematsu). If Shinji is gentle in nature and looking at emotions, the alien inhabiting Akira is the complete opposite: ruthless, brutal, and quite interested in finding out what makes humans physically tick. She has picked up martial art skills and an appetite for destruction. Seedy tabloid journalist Sakurai (Hiroki Hasegawa) is sent to cover her murderous mayhem around the time he meets another alien, a nonchalant teenage boy named Amano (Mahiro Takasugi). Sakurai, initially sceptical about spacemen and thought-stealers decides to hang out with the two teens and discovers he has a major scoop: it’s all real and there’s an alien invasion about to kick-off. What all of these characters don’t know is that they are being hunted by agents from the Health Ministry.

Before We Vanish Film Image 2

With the players on the pitch, they are all set in motion chasing and evading each other.

Throughout his filmography Kiyoshi Kurosawa has often flitted between genres and sometimes combined them and Before We Vanish is a mighty genre mash-up, leisurely strolling through apocalyptic alien invasion thriller and sci-fi romantic comedy territory throughout the course of its 130 minute run-time.

The film actually dials down the invasion thrills for a low-tension apocalypse and indulges in romantic and culture clash comedy moments with sudden spikes of violence. As Narumi tries to understand her husband, Shinji gets into hijinks. His inability to move properly leads to funny physical comedy and Matsuda’s blank face is the perfect punchline for deadpan humour, especially for the verbal stuff, which drives Narumi and others crazy. Acting as a counterpoint to this gentle comedy are action scenes and chase sequences. Some are flat and merely serve to move the plot along however some are shot in such a way as to help increase the sense of threat from government agents. The highlights are definitely the fights involving Akira Tachibana, who is utterly ruthless in the way she takes apart middle-aged men in hand-to-hand combat. These moments are stunning and bring excitement to what is a laidback narrative as Yuri Tsunematsu dazzles in some sharp fight choreography but the alien’s ability to steal concepts are also used in these moments to take the fights in unexpected directions.

These elements keep the film from becoming maudlin as human emotions are explored through Narumi and Shinji’s relationship.

Indeed, the substance of the film, what gives it low-tension horror and mordant humour and what makes it really engaging is found in the way people live with and are held back by concepts which aliens expose and plunder, freeing people from the ideas that cause unhappiness and joy. Characters react to losing a lifetime of shame and hatred with looks of bliss while seeing people lose concepts that hold societies together like family is really chilling and plays into a wider sense of an apocalypse as we see Japan’s fraying social fabric. That it happens in everyday spaces with relatable people and there’s government pushback as agents take to the streets suggests a social satire and a critique of the underlying political tensions in Abe’s Japan with war and surveillance and the price of social conditioning that condones workplace abuse mined for content.

Another glib comparison might be Kurosawa’s 2001 film Pulse as characters head towards the end of everything but there’s less creeping dread and awful loneliness and more brightness and hope because what really gives the film heart is the central relationship between Shinji and Narumi. This is Nagasawa’s film as she runs a whole gamut of emotions from anger and disgust to faithful love as Narumi has to decide whether to stand by her man and proves to be a fantastic way in to understanding the end of the world. It is fitting that they could hold the key to the fate of humanity and allows Kurosawa to pull the entire narrative together at the very end for a surprisingly tender and strong finale that feels genuinely romantic and well-earned and caps every idea brought up in the film.

Transferring

校生  「Tenkousei」

Running Time: 20 mins.

Release Date: 2012

Director: Junichi Kanai

Writer: Junichi Kanai (Screenplay),

Starring: Aoi Morikawa, Riko Masuda, Tomoki Fujiwara,

IMDB

Junichi Kanai’s short film, “Transferring” was the winner of the Sonje Award at the 2012 Pusan International Film Festival and Best Picture at the Skip City International D-Cinema Festival 2013. This is a touching and amusing comedy about two outsiders making a connection.

Yoko (Aoi Morikawa) is a spirited junior high school girl who, when the film opens, has just been cast in the lead female role in her class’ adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet”. She’d rather be director or in charge of lighting, who the hell are her classmates to vote for her to take the female lead? Her defiance earns her the ire of the rest of the class who give her the silent treatment. Absolutely nobody talks to Yoko and she endures it. Things might change when a new transfer student appears. Lisa Sayama stands in front of the class to introduce herself and says, “I don’t think I’ll have friends here. Thank you for listening.”

Intrigued, and with nobody else who will speak to her, Yoko tries to connect with the new student.

Shot in a real school with real students, the verbal exchanges between Yoko, played by Aoi Morikawa as a somewhat headstrong girl, and her teacher an amiable guy who is a bit goofy, works well in establishing characters and a gentle comedic tone with an underlying sharp edge that show how social links are forged or frozen. In one sequence the camera pans around to cover the entire classroom and it is alive with activity as all the kids are doing something but Yoko’s humour and cheekiness causes her to get a literal take on silent treatment when the girl, who is as sharp as a pin and a joy to listen to, goes too far in revealing what she thinks. The rowdy class becomes quiet whenever she enters. This helps provide a base for the relationship between Yoko and Lisa to develop as Yoko uses cheeky humour to break down barriers Lisa throws up.

Indeed, the barriers are many as Lisa resists and in scenes when Yoko is trying to get closer to Lisa, director Junichi Kanai creates a weird and desolate atmosphere through the soundtrack. Yoko trails after her down streets while the sound of a cruel wind whipping leaves into the air can be heard, perhaps suggests Lisa’s inner-self as she has no friends and seem to give off a barren personality. “Don’t follow me,” is what she says to Yoko with utter seriousness before slamming the front gate of her house in Yoko’s face. Yoko returns that order but as a joke and soon it becomes a phrase the two throw at each other for fun. In a neat bit of symbolism, Lisa scales the same front gate, after finally giving in.

Yoko, acting like a clown, overcomes this desolation with constant smiles and laughter. Her persistence breaks down barriers. Persistence and castella cake. They go from being isolated to hanging out together. A long shot of the two chatting away in the classroom is hopeful in its implications and the viewer will want to keep seeing hopeful smiles on their faces.

Transferring Aoi Morikawa

The thing that makes this work is the performances of the girls who are very naturalistic – spiky and not overly cute, opinionated and brave but still displaying some vulnerability. The ending becomes packed full of emotion as the bittersweet tale of friendship between two lonely girls ends on a beautiful note and the hope that someone will always be there following us.

Writer: Takeshi Kogahara (Screenplay),

Starring: Kenshin Endo, Himeka Asami, Shu Takaura, Namiko Ikeda, Ruri Ikeda, Minami Muroi,

IMDB
Cinematic explorations of first love are seemingly a dime a dozen but each can be special if given a twist and Nagisa” is special. This is a tale of innocent love at the height of summer as a schoolboy tries to get closer to the titular Nagisa and what makes it special is that Takeshi Kogahara uses various cinematic techniques to show how a human connection and a moment in time can imprint itself in a person’s memory and heart and influence a life.

It all starts on the edge of the school pool, Fuminao, sensitive and quiet, is sat next to his classmate, the playful and coy Nagisa.

Close-ups on their faces show them as they watch the rest of the class swim. They begin to talk for the first time. She coaxes feelings out of the boy but remains illusive as he struggles to verbalise how he feels. Cut to a long shot from a distance that will act as an anchor scene that will hold the film’s narrative in place. We watch them from behind, their voices clearly heard along with the sound of their classmates in the pool. They get to know each other. She inspires him. As the conversation flows, director Takeshi Kogahara uses multiple cut-aways to different times in Fuminao’s life while their voices from that moment can still be heard. This is just the start of a series of non-linear and visually diverse techniques in storytelling and powerful sound design which makes this tale of first love a refreshingly new experience to dive into as it envelopes the audience in an astonishing aura that draws them into the atmosphere while the story works beneath the surface to create an extremely beautiful film.

Confident shot-selection and controlled editing creates an emotional depth as we piece together the story of Fuminao’s love and the impact his conversation with Nagisa has on him. The constant movement between scenes keeps the story flowing and expands the physical/emotional world on screen. The use of blue as the dominant colour creates a liquid texture that signals changes in the emotional current with its lightening and darkening while the superb sound design roots us in that poolside conversation that sparks off everything and acts like a heartbeat. The noise of water splashing, cicadas buzzing, and other things we associate with summer added to dialogue from that moment creates the film’s constant soundscape. Most of all, Nagisa’s voice and Fuminao’s replies to her playful probing. With the repetition of the conversation, we understand the significance of every word for Fuminao and the intensity of the emotions the boy felt and how everything is etched in his memory.

Great acting from Kenshin Endo sensitively portrays a student in love and unable to leave behind the memory he has of a girl who meant so much to him. Himeka Asami is just the right side of mysterious and sophisticated that she becomes a perfect lightning rod for the boy’s feelings.

Conversations happen all the time but some are unforgettable. Their conversation may be as brief as the cicadas but it clearly dominates his thoughts. Her voice repeats inside his head over and over. She will stay with him forever.

The techniques Kogahara uses to tell the story are so effective it helps the film build up an emotional current that sweeps the viewer into the whirlpool of teenage love and drowns them in sensory impressions that will show the impact the conversation had on Fuminao. It is a pure distillation of a moment when you meet someone truly special and they imprint themselves onto your heart. This is like seeing how memories work, powerful and compelling, this short shows Kogahara is a director to watch.

The South Korean city of Busan is most famous as a hotbed of cinema and politics and one of the many projects it hosts is a three-week film-making residency that allows directors to make a short film with a Korean cast and staff which will then be screened at the UNESCO sponsored Busan Inter-City Film Festival. Taking part in last year’s residency was Jimbo Yoshimasa whose high-quality work, “Here and Here” turns the camera on the city and its residents in a drama about a pregnant woman confronting her fears about giving birth.

Taking place over the course of one day, we follow Mina, a writer for B.Cent magazine. Despite being seven-months pregnant, she is stomping the streets of Busan for an article. Her assignment is collecting people’s first memories through a series of interviews. Old men and young girls, whoever catches her attention gets questioned and their answers are recorded. Behind her smiles, she is anxious about what giving birth feels like as is revealed through an underlying subtext of her fears that emerges during her interviews and phone conversations with someone from her personal life.

From morning to evening, we follow Mina around the city of Busan and director Yoshimasa Jimbo allows us to experience the daily beats of the city, riding subways from down-town markets to cinemas, Jangsan Temple, a place of peace and quiet, and a busy park. Yoshimasa uses a handheld camera to catch Mina on the move, a bundle of energy with a purpose and, like many modern people, she works while on the go, so we get a succinct tour of the city while observing her listening to her interviews and writing notes during her commute. Sound design reflects the changes in location and work style, becoming tinnier when Mina listens to things on earphones, accompanied by ambient noise when talking face-to-face, and delivered at a higher volume when in an intimate conversation. People being interviewed are shot from behind so that we always see Mina’s face as she occupies the left corner of the screen. We see her reactions to their comments and it is interesting to watch the subtle shifting of emotions as people touch on issues personal to her. The story progresses until she is the centre of the picture and ultimately taken out of it when it comes time to delve into her own past much like the people who will go into her article. Her voice becomes the dominant feature and it works as we observe the city on screen.

Shot with a feeling immediacy, the settings are full of real people. Families, singletons, the young and the elderly, an empty baby carriage, even a family of ducks strutting around, everything gives a sense of life flowing through the locations. When coupled with Mina’s story and her narration, the images take on some symbolic meaning so it isn’t necessary for her to be on screen the entire time. The emotion in Mina’s voice is powerful, especially when the cracks appear and she speaks openly about her pregnancy. It culminates in a final sequence which shows minor miracles can happen in everyday surroundings with ordinary people, but then, there are no such things as ordinary people. Everyone, everywhere and everything is special in some way. Busan looks special.

So many short films like to burrow down into an individual but this one does that and maintains its connections with the universal whole. Our focus is one woman but the life around her fills the frame as well and we see a celebration of Busan and those who call it home. What unfolds over the 20 minutes of the film is a beautiful, graceful intimate look at fear and hope of one individual and the symbiotic relationship of people who live in Busan, something anyone living in a community will be able to appreciate.

Also, that music played on the end credits is awesome!!!

Happy mid-week, everyone!(?!?!?)

Here and Here Film Image

This post is late because I was doing a lot of press work at the Osaka Asian Film Festival and working late into the night on the final two days. I maintained by cool better than last year but a few mistakes slipped in because I tend to rush to complete work. Still, the team pulled through. There was that dull pressure that comes after exhaustion sets in on the final night but I found the experience gratifying. It’s almost all over now and I’m travelling. I’m currently staying with a cool friend for the night before moving on to a new location tomorrow. My reviews for films I have seen at the Osaka Asian Film Festival are starting to be published such as Here and Here and Nagisa on this blog and I’ve got interviews to transcribe and get checked before publishing. So, plenty of work to do!

I hope everyone is having fun.

Happy weekend, people!

Eriko, Pretended Film Image

I’m just about ready to get back into normal service again after spending much of last week working and much of this week travelling. The sun has been shining, I had dinner with a really cool person I admire and I visited good places. I am happy.

I have more OAFF 2018 reviews stacked up, the only reason I didn’t post them this week was because I was rushing around doing things or relaxing and exploring places and, I must admit, I need to do rewrites on some. That period is almost over as I am about to resume my normal life but the festival process is starting with Kotatsu and I am working on new projects in my day-job.

What is released this weekend in Japan (we’re on time this week, people!!!)?

CYCLE-CYCLE

Running Time: 18 mins.

Release Date: 2018

Director: Junichi Kanai

Writer: Junichi Kanai (Screenplay),

Starring: Jinto Yoshida, Haruki Yamazaki, Daichi Shiozaki

Website IMDB

Jinto Yoshida, Haruki Yamazaki, and Daichi Shiozaki are three members of the idol group M!LK and they are starring in a short film billed as a “fresh, light, absurd teen movie which sharply cuts into Japan social problems.” What audiences will get is a well-shot mildly amusing road-trip movie with only the slightest glance at a social problem. However, for fans of the group, this is the perfect film that highlights the foibles and behaviour of the people they adore.

The story starts with two high school boys, Junpei and Satoshi, who have started a bicycle trip around Japan on a tandem after failing their college entrance exams. Headstrong Junpei claims he is on this trip because he is determined to look at his life from a fresh perspective but Satoshi is more interested in looking at his social media profile and hoping for a bump in followers with his journey. Soon they argue and split up. Junpei keeps going on his own trip by bicycle and picks up a hitch-hiker named Mitsuru to ride with him.

IF02_cyclecycle

Mitsuru is heading to his grandfather’s house in Ibaraki. He he hasn’t seen him for ten years since his parents had a falling-out with the old man and he is excited to see his grandparent again but things don’t turn out the way he expects.

The early section of the film relies on humour and the chemistry between the three lads to make the story work and it does for the most part, with some clear characterisation in the script and performances marking Junpei out as dominating, Satoshi as vain and Mitsuru as a bit naive but a good fellow. As the three cycle around on the highways of Japan, their personalities come out and dominate the screen which is intentional because fans will be totally into seeing their chemistry at work. For non-fans there are some very funny moments such as a sight gag involving Junpei sabotaging Mitsuru’s attempts at hitch-hiking because the wannabe cyclist wants someone riding behind him but the jokes are mostly small-scale, tracing the differences in the verbal and character-driven qualities of the boys. The film takes a turn into dark territory when it ventures into Mitsuru’s story.

This second part of the film is shot rather well in the sense that there is some decent transition to something more serious in the script thanks to dialogue from Mitsuru giving backstory and the acting feeling solid enough. In terms of direction, there is appropriate build up with regard to the way the boys make the discovery and the reveal is genuinely affecting. The film doesn’t venture too deep into the hows and whys or make much of a social comment other than “stuff like this happens” before it quickly moves back into a lighter tone, effectively avoiding dealing with any complex issues and any deep analysis of the emotional impact.

The time spent with the three boys is pleasant enough and it’s no wonder because director Junichi Kanai has experience getting good performances from teens as seen in Transferring”, which won the Best National Short and Best Director at Sapporo Short Fest in 2012. The lads use their charisma to great effect to sell their lines and keep the camera’s gaze on them

This is definitely one for the fans. Seeing it in a crowd full of adoring girls and guys ranging from glamorous chaps in suits and girls in frilly dresses to otaku was essential for understanding the draw of the film. Slight gags and humour took on greater meaning as the crowd showed how dedicated fans observed and saw their idols on screen, laughing with every comedic moment and sighing with sympathy at sad parts. Being part of a group feeling the same emotions helped give the film power and made it more enjoyable. Outside of their company, this is passable entertainment. Any attempt to talk about social problems comes a firm second in this is well-shot but inessential film that shows director Junichi Kanai can handle all sorts of material regardless of its background and intent.

Girl Returned” is built around a nightmare scenario – a child has been kidnapped. 15-year-old Misaki Fujino (Reina Kikuchi) was snatched by an average-looking guy while jogging and held imprisoned in his apartment for two years. Following her rescue by the police, she is allowed back to her home but the experience has left her not knowing what to do. Finally free from her kidnapper, she is now trapped in the role of a victim. The media wait outside the house for a story, her parents are trapped inside with the fear she will disappear again, and Misaki… all she does is wait for the time to pass and the scandal to die down.

IF04_GirlReturned

What to do? This is the grey area that the film explores and does so excellently and without an ounce of distasteful melodrama. This is a film about a girl readjusting to normality and her community readjusting to her presence. It is done through a neat bit of mirroring of events. As the crushing weight of normality bears down on her, Misaki sheds habits learned at her kidnapper’s place – out with the PlayStation game she constantly played, adopting a new hairstyle and venturing outside into the garden and so forth.

The real key to overcoming two years trapped in an apartment is jogging. This simple action becomes the gauntlet she must run to get back to herself.

Through showing Misaki’s simple actions of reclaiming everyday routines, and people’s reactions to her efforts, the film charts the gradual unwinding of tenseness felt by people as they shift back into normal life now that their girl has returned and how everyone is able to breathe deeply again.

The script ensures the community has a place in this process, the tenderness and understanding of friends and family proving important, especially that of her parents who lived through that trauma and show the strain of it, their love and their protectiveness revealed through their uneasy acquiescence to her desire to run – just look at the worried faces and jumps of alarm when she ventures outside and the gradual release as they let go of worries and let her jog.

As the lead character, Reina Kikuchi does a fine job of portraying a girl struggling with trauma, exhibiting listless behaviour and a zombie-gaze fixed on a PlayStation 2 game, tremulous movements when talking to men, and finally clutching on to her independence through the simple act of jogging. Everyone around her offers performances that breathe normality and help the atmosphere of the film.

Mise-en-scene is determinedly normal, the aesthetics glue the story to the everyday, and there is nothing distracting in terms of visuals. The pace is slow and everything is held together by controlled direction which emphasises the progress Misaki makes through mental and physical activity.

Exercise is a way of pushing the body to grow, to add muscle-mass, to increase the flow of blood to the heart and oxygen to the brain while strengthening bones and joints. This has the benefit of crafting a body that can protect oneself physically and also changes the way a person thinks because the activity deluges the system with endorphins and other hormones and chemicals that have a massive influence on the way they think. The added benefits of seeing physical obstacles overcome reinforces this. As Misaki exercises, she becomes stronger. Her world expands from one room to the outside world.

The film shows the impact of the crime on the girl and her family and those who are connected to her and offers audiences a realistic and maybe hopeful resolution because life carries on and one must not be beaten down. Everyone goes through tough times but we must persevere which is what Misaki does.

At the end of the film, what we see is a girl who has returned to her family, a girl returned to normal life, and, hopefully, a girl returned to herself.

Who knows how far she will go.

A Preview of the Japanese Film Festival Ireland 2018 –“The Sower” and “The Night is Short, Walk on Girl” headline a great programme

The Japanese Film Festival Ireland is back for its 10th year and the event kicks off on April 08th and lasts until the 21st as a diverse programme of films made in Japan over the last year and a half are screened. This list features some of the best films to have been given a release including two titles by Masaaki Yuasa, the hottest talent in anime right now, and also, The Sower, a finely controlled human drama that is both beautiful and haunting. It made me cry every time I watched it. I have watched it around five times! That shows you its power!

A selection of the films will be hosted at each of the venues stretching from Cork, Galway, Limerick, Tipperary, Dublin, Sligo, Waterford and finally to Dundalk over the next month so check out the website to see which venues have which films.

Here are the films programmed:

IMDB           Website

I had the pleasure of watching this as part of the Osaka Asian Film Festival where I also met its director, Yosuke Takeuchi. It’s a fine film, one of the best I have seen in recent years. Its genesis comes from the personal life of the director and also the life of Vincent van Gogh and how the artist lived a humble and naive existence to the full despite the treatment he faced from society. That story is reflected in not just one of the main characters, the titular “Sower”, but also the people around him. Through their story, a wider one about the treatment of outsiders occurs. This is a remarkable drama that I have seen five times and I am impressed by it which is why I am highlighting it as part of this festival.

Here’s my review for V-Cinema for The Sower.

Naoko Ogigami is one of Japan’s interesting female directors, quietly working away making good films and many people are familiar with them. Yoshino’s Barber Shop (2004), Kamome Diner (2006), Glasses (2007), and Rent-a-Cat (2012) could be described as quirky dramas that pack a powerful emotional punch but Close-Knit is a lot more serious as Ogigami looks at LGBTQ issues in Japan, a country that is still conservative in some ways.Close Knit Film Image 2

Close-Knit may be serious but it features many well-rounded characters that will suck you into the world of the characters and show you that love is everything when it comes to family and through this you will definitely get you to understand the issues. Here’s an interview involving Naoko Ogigami which goes through the film a bit more. Here’s my review of the film Close-Knit.

SynopsisEleven-year-old Tomo is pretty much left to her own devices by a mother who is flighty, to say the least. When she leaves her daughter for good one day the girl has to rely on help from her uncle, who takes in Tomo to live with him and his girlfriend Rinko. At their first meeting Tomo is flabbergasted to discover that Rinko is a transsexual. MAL     IMDB    Website

The Night is Short, Walk on Girl is the latest film from anime auteur Masaaki Yuasa and his studio Science Saru. One of two award-winning movies he released in 2017 (the other being Lu Over the Wall which took top prize at Annecy), this film is the very definition of the word exuberant in terms of story and style and should cement Yuasa as one of the best anime directors around. This is my second recommendation for the film festival. It was programmed at a fest I work for and I can say, without a doubt, that the audience has a riot of a time! Here’s my review!!!

Synopsis: The narrative is simple: A black haired girl (voiced by the ubiquitous and super-talented Kana Hanazawa) is attending the wedding reception of a friend. As far as she is concerned, the party doesn’t have to end there and she walks around the streets of Kyoto at night from the alleyways and izakayas of Pontocho to the university campus, following the Komagawa river and making detours along the way. She is pursued by a male admirer, Sempai (voiced by the musician Gen Hoshino who also played the hapless lover in Why Don’t You Play in Hell?), who tries to catch her attention by appearing before her as often as possible. As this rather one-sided romantic dance unfolds, they experience surreal magical-realist moments that grow increasingly absurd thanks to a cast of unique characters, all of which tests Sempai’s resolve in love and the girl’s capacity for drink and fun because all the while, everyone keeps drinking and having a good time.

Lu Over the Wall was released in Japan on May 19th and it has picked up awards since then including at Annecy, where it took the “Cristal for a Feature Film” award. It is directed by Masaaki Yuasa with a script written by Reiko Yoshida, a woman who has written many different anime such as A Silent Voice, Yowamushi Pedal, and Shirobako. It was produced by Yuasa’s protege (and a highly talented animator) Eun young Choi, and animated by Science SARU and these folks are the geniuses behind Mind Game, Ping Pong: The Animation, and The Tatami Galaxy amongst other great artistic titles.

It has the look of the 2009 Ghibli film Ponyo if I were to make a glib comparison but the animation and style are pure Science SARU, a studio finally picking up fans in the mainstream. The film has been picked up for UK distribution by Anime Limited.

Synopsis: Middle school student Kai finds himself forced to move from Tokyo to the declining fishing town of Hinashi to live with his father and grandfather following his parents’ divorce. For a kid from the big metropolis, there’s little for him to do besides composing music and sharing it on the Internet. One day his classmates Kunio and Yuuho invite him to join their band, and when he reluctantly accompanies them to practice on Mermaid Island, the three of them meet a mermaid named Lu. Through meeting her and playing music, Kai is slowly able to open up about his emotions but calamity soon strikes the town and he must find a way to avert it with his new-found friends and community!

Starring: Kaung Myat Thu, Khin Myat Thu, Issace, Htet Myat Naing, Yuki Kitagawa, Kanji Tsuda,

IMDB Website

I saw this at the recent Osaka Asian Film Festival. It comes from Akio Fujimoto, a first-time feature film director, who has worked with non-professional actors in this drama. Their efforts ensured the film won the Spirit of Asia Award, given by the Japan Foundation Asia Center at last year’s Tokyo International Film Festival.

Synopsis: Passage of Life is based on reality and shows the lives of a Burmese family that immigrated to Japan with no visa.

JFDB   IMDB  Website

Playwright and director Kenji Yamauchi premiered his film during the 2016 edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival where it garnered positive buzz from critics for its mix of sensuous and caustic comedy of manners. Based on one of his plays, Trois Grotesques, Yamauchi refuses to cleave away too far from his source and keeps things simple with a film shot in a single location with a cast of seven actors, all of whom were players in the preceding play itself which explains why their comic performances are so perfect. Here’s my review of At the Terrace.

Synopsis: The film opens at a lavish house somewhere in the suburbs of Tokyo. The house is owned by Mr Soejima (Kenji Iwatani), the director of a company, and his wife Kazumi (Kei Ishibashi), both of whom are hosting a night-time party which drags on for a small group of guests because the more they drink the more they feel the need to linger behind and explore some bitter feelings and bad behaviour bubbling away underneath their polite Japanese exteriors.

Synopsis from the Japan Cuts 2017 festival site: Teiichi Akaba (Masaki Suda) has a singular dream: to crush the competition, become prime minister and rule his own country. But first he just has to get through high school. An absurdist satire of Japan’s elitist pathways to the seats of power, Akira Nagai’s adaptation of Usamaru Furuya’s manga finds Showa-era blue-blooded teens battling for the student council presidency. Sabotage, bribery, ritual suicide, fisticuffs and more than a few unspoken crushes charge the boys’ all out warfare, revealing the failures of hierarchical power systems and toxic masculinity. This achingly relevant, hilarious tale comes to a head when a working-class pro-democracy challenger questions the plutocrats’ factional wrangle and Teiichi is forced to recall the pure passion that drove him to his totalitarian bloodthirst.

Website IMDB

This one is a foray into live-action for UK distro Anime Limited and it seems to do a decent job of trying to capture the manga it is based on apart from some dodgy CG. It was at the Abertoir Horror Festival.

Synopsis: The story takes place in an alternate reality where ghouls, people who eat human flesh to survive, live amongst humans and are hunted by the government. Ken Kaneki is a normal college student who goes on a date with the beautiful and sophisticated Rize. Turns out his potential girlfriend is a ghoul-friend and he finds that out firsthand when she brutally attacks Ken with the intention of devouring him. He escapes due to a freak accident but his injuries are life-threatening. After being taken to a hospital, discovers that he underwent a surgery that transformed him into a half-ghoul thanks to doctors transferring Rize’s organs into his body, and now, like normal ghouls, he must consume human flesh to survive. It’s a struggle to adapt to his new life as he is taken into ghoul society but tries to keep contact with his human friends…

Hirokazu Koreeda’s murder mystery sees him bring together a great cast, some of whom he has worked with before. Suzu Hirose was the eponymous little sister in Our Little Sister and Masaharu Fukuyama was one of the fathers in (Like Father Like Son) and there’s also the masterful Koji Yakusho who has worked with most of the great modern directors like Juzo Itami (Tampopo), Takashi Miike (Thirteen Assassins), and Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure) and Tetsuya Nakashima (director of the still totally mind-blowing film The World of Kanako. There is also the wonderful underused actor Mikako Ichikawa who took the lead in the utterly charming Rent-a-neko! It’s currently on general release in the UK thanks to Arrow Films but this festival is a great way to see it.

Synopsis: Shigemori (Fukuyama) is a hot-shot lawyer on a mean winning streak but when he is compelled to take on defending a man named Mikuma (Yakusho) he finds the first case which could cause the wheels to fall off his career.

Mikuma is accused of a murdering the president of a company and setting fire to the corpse. It looks like an open-and-shut-case since Mikuma has confessed and he was convicted of a murder that took place 30 years ago. The death penalty is almost a certainty but the more Shigemori investigates and the more he talks to Mikuma, the less certain he becomes of the man’s guilt and the case itself.

The truth lies with the daughter of the murdered president, Sakie (Hirose)…

Hello, dear readers.

Only Yesterday Film Image 2

A bit of a subdued opening to this week’s trailer post because of the death of Isao Takahata at the age of 82. This is a sad moment because he was a true creative genius. Anyone familiar with his films and TV shows will know that, as well as founding Ghibli and supporting artists, he was a groundbreaking artist himself and pushed boundaries. Look at the difference in style and story from his directorial debut The Little Norse Prince to the heartbreaking Grave of the Fireflies and his last film, Princess Kaguya. My personal favourite is Only Yesterday which, despite my best resistance, got me crying floods of tears at the end. Pom Poko was another that broke through my defences but the most potent was Grave. I cannot watch that film again. It broke me the first time. I sincerely hope Takahata has found peace and his family find comfort in this trying time.

This week saw me post about the Japan Film Festival Ireland and Mari Okada visiting the UK.

What’s released this weekend?

Lady Nosferatu Film Image

On Saturday April 21st and Sunday April 22nd, staff from Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival will be at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff to present a series of short film screenings from Japan as part of the Cardiff International Animation Festival (CIAF). These are from a special programme of animated graduate films from Japan’s top National art University, Tokyo National University of Arts Graduate School and Kotatsu was able to get these thanks to Professor Yuichi Ito who oversees the course and came to last year’s Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival.

The stories are some of the best to have been produced by graduates from the university and this is a rare chance to see the likes of them outside of the London International Animated Film Festival and Japan. Here are more details on the CIAF page and a Geidai page set up to showcase some of the content.

The Udine Far East Film Festival plays from April 20th to the 28th and it is the 20th year it has been in operation. There are over 80 films programmed with a strong contingent from Japan. Also at the festival are many films from across the rest of Asia, some of which got there world premieres at the Osaka Asian Film Festival last month – No. 1 Chung Ying Street. More interestingly, there’s a celebration of Brigitte Lin so that means screenings of Chungking Express and Dragon Inn!!!!

This is a film blog dedicated to Japanese cinema so I’m covering the Japanese films now but I will endeavour to get reviews for as many of these titles as possible!

What are the Japanese films programmed for the festival?

Website IMDB

F*CK YEAH! Crazy Koji Yakusho is fun Koji Yakusho. For the record, I’m a big fan of his mostly thanks to his work with Kiyoshi Kurosawa but his performance in The World of Kanako was some next level stuff. This film taps into a similar energy but it is directed by Kazuya Shiraishi who made two lacklustre crime films, The Devil’s Path and Twisted Justice. His Roman Porno, Dawn of the Felines was okay.

Synopsis: It is the summer of 1988 in the fictional city of Kurebara, Hiroshima. The disappearance of an employee of a financial company leads to squeaky-clean cop Shuichi Hioka (Tori Matsuzaka) getting paired with veteran detective and rumoured-to-be corrupt cop Shogo Ogami (Koji Yakusho) just as a war between yakuza clans heats up.

Website IMDB

Shuichi Okita, director of A Story of Yonosuke and The Woodsman and the Rain brings a gentle dramedy about an elderly couple. It looks relaxing and you can’t go wrong with Kirin Kiki.

Synopsis from Nikkatsu International: He lays among the shrubs and trees in his garden and observes the scurrying ants. This 94-year-old bearded man is Morikazu Kumagai, aka Mori, and he is a painter. For the last 30 years he’s hardly left his property. Most of his day is spent tirelessly observing his garden and all living things in it, which he renders into paintings. He paints every evening in a studio he calls the “school.” While he goes about his business, his wife Hideko attends to a string of visitors. In the garden there are the critters and insects and on the porch, birds in cages overlook the garden. Mori and Hideko live peacefully, surrounded by the things they love. But then some developers decide to build a condominium next door which puts their small paradise at risk. It will block the sun and the garden will be uninhabitable. Mori and Hideko decide to take action to protect the garden they cherish… The film is a humorous depiction of a summer day in the life of an old couple who’ve been together 52 years, in the more affable social atmosphere of the 1970s.
