Synopsis: JUNK WORLD is the prequel to JUNK HEAD. It takes place 1042 years before the first film and is set in what looks to be the same underground world. The robot Parton also returns from the first film, or, rather, the owner of the original robot Parton body as we find out how it came to be in the maze of tunnels.

The new story follows Tris, the captain of a human research team sent to investigate strange happenings in the underground world. Robin (the original owner of the Parton body) is his escort and guardian. During their mission, they are attacked by a cult Marigan cult, the artificial mutants made to slave away in the depths of the underground world. As the research team fights for survival, they discover the source of the strange anomalies they were sent to find, a dimensional distortion…

In a comment, creator Takahide Hori (who fulfils the role of writer/director and other production side roles) highlighted the rareness of a stop-motion science fiction film in today’s cinema landscape and his hopes that people will enjoy Junk World.

The first round of details for Junk World were revealed last year, on August 24th, as director Takahide Hori launched a crowdfunding campaign for the film. In the time since then, a small team, that includes stop-motion animator Atsuko Miyake, whom I interviewed(!), has been working hard making the film come to life in order to meet the 2025 release date. It has been an ambitious undertaking for a stop-motion movie but, as the trailer shows, it’s coming together nicely and we now have a matter of mere months before we get to explore the scary underground world once again.
