Welcome to the second trailer post of the week.

So, last week I wrote that there were around 69 new entries for February last year and around 45 the year before. For February 2025, there were 52 Japanese films put into the cinema ecosystem.

We’re now approaching March and so how many films were covered in the past: 65 releases in 2023 and 32 in 2024.

Director Takahiro Miki became big off adaptations of manga like Solanin (2010) and We Were There 1 and 2 (both 2012) and has continued for over a decade working in this vein. His latest is based on the French film Love at Second Sight (2019, IMDB) and features the singer Milet.

Synopsis: Riku and Minami fell in love at first sight and got married quickly while still in university. Eight years later, Riku has achieved his dreams of becoming a novelist with the support of Minami, who has given up her dreams of becoming a singer. One morning Riku awakens to find Minami is gone and he is no longer a novelist but a member of editorial staff at a literary magazine. When he next sees Riku, she’s a successful singer who has no recollection of him. Riku figures out that he is in an alternate reality and tries to regain his original life and make the now-successful Minami fall in love with him again.

Yugo Kanno, composer on Psycho-Pass (2012), Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (from Stardust Crusaders), directs this, his second film, which was screened at the Yokohama International Film Festival 2024 and features a story about a composer.

The film stars Yuta Hiraoka (Swing Girls (2004) and Nana (2005)) and Reika Sakurai, a first generation member of the idol group Nogizaka46.

Synopsis: A successful composer named Takumi is haunted by visions of his best friend who passed away ten years ago from an incurable disease. Before his death, his friend asked Takumi but the composer’s relationship with a certain woman has left him emotionally scarred and creatively stuck. His desperation grows when a trusted assistant is caught up in a crime and Takumi only has the support of Sae, the editor-in-chief of a magazine…

This is an anime adaptation of the story of the life of Japanese Buddhist monk Shinran.

According to Anime News Network, this is the third film in a series, with the first film being Naze Ikiru: Rennyo Shounin to Yoshizaki Enjou from 2016 and a sequel in 2019. Anyway, both are based on a Buddhist story by Kentetsu Takamori (source) and this book was published in English under the title Unlocking TANNISHO: Shinran’s Words on the Pure Land Path.

From 1992 to 1999, AIC produced Sekai no Hikari: Shinran Seijin, a six-part original video anime series about Shinran.

Synopsis: A historical entertainment film that depicts the life of Japanese Buddhist monk Shinran, the founder of the Japanese independent True Pure Land sect of Buddhism, and it is set about 850 years ago, in the turbulent times from the end of the Heian period to the Kamakura period and it looks like it deals with his relationship with a princess.
