I’ve been doing extra overtime in work to cover the cost of a plane ticket to Japan. Prices are looking not too bad for a return at the cheapest end but that does require a stopover in China so it’ll be a case of constantly checking prices once a day. It has been almost five years since I was last in Japan and I am practicing more Japanese than ever to get ready.

See the film that helped get Seijun Suzuki fired from Nikkatsu for being too arty. This landmark yakuza flick parodies the genre mercilessly while its low-budget forced Suzuki to be visually inventive, combining modernist aesthetics with visuals straight from traditional Japanese theatre. It has gone down as a classic that has inspired filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Takeshi Kitano, Jim Jarmusch, and John Woo.
Synopsis: Attempting to go straight, a yakuza enforcer named Tetsu looks forward to life outside of organised crime and getting married to his girlfriend Chiharu but finds his attempts frustrated and so he must become a drifter and move across Japan after his old rivals attempt to assassinate him. When Chiharu is put in danger, however, he heads back to Tokyo for a showdown.
