I posted about the Tokyo Student Film Festival and the indie films at the Kanazawa Film Festival. I also posted a review of The Seppuku Pistols, a music documentary, and an interview with its director, Yo Umezaki, because the band are on tour in the UK.
In terms of films watched, I tried out Pearl (2023) and Maxxxine (2024) and found them both fine films – more pastiche of older films and with very little subtext. Solidly constructed with plenty of nasty kills.

A story set in 2023 sees a sad and lonely widower named Ryota name an AI after his deceased wife and start to talk to it. This was written and directed by Tomoya Yanata, whose photography and video works focus on Shinjuku. The film was shot on locations around Shinjuku, Golden Gai, Yotsuya, and Kabukicho. It features Allie Kamikaze, a nationally and internationally acclaimed pole dancer, who makes her film debut here.
Synopsis: Nora-neko (Stray Cat) was a successful photographer until a model suddenly died on one of his shoots. Frequenting his favourite bar in Shinjuku, he hears a rumour about a pole dancer named Inko, who quit dancing after an audience member died during a performance. This film and a short named CLOVER will be screened together to commemorate the 25th anniversary of their first theatrical release.
