I’m coming to the end of the Twin Peaks saga, having watched all of the films and TV series. I haven’t got anything long form ready to take its place so it’ll be back to film consumption.
Actually, my Japanese immersion went pretty well as I did five hours of films watching, shadowing podcasts, and writing, and picked up a few things. I have been studying Japanese on and off since before this blog came into being and I should be better than I am so I am throwing the kitchen sink at this.

This is a film that was produced as part of the fifth stage of “My Graduation Project,” which aims to discover and nurture young actors and promote regional development.
The story is set in Niigata and the cast includes Haruka Ogoe of the Niigata idol group NGT48.
Synopsis: This is an ensemble coming-of-age drama about student about to graduate from a high school in Niigata and the choices in life that they face, including a girl who wants to go to an overseas university in order to promote her family’s miso brewery to the world, a couple whose relationship is on the rocks because the girl has had an offer to become a geisha, and another girl who has been scouted by an entertainment agency.

Synopsis: Yuri Norstein is a Russian animator artist widely loved in Japan, known for his masterpiece Hedgehog in the Fog (1975). Ryo Saitani (Cesium and a Tokyo Girl) has previously made a documentary about the same subject, Yuriy Norshteyn: Making the Overcoat.
This film is a compilation of interviews conducted with Norstein in 2023, one year after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Norstein, who lives in Moscow, has been an outspoken critic of the invasion and the government and in the film, he talks about the war, literature, and art.
ndjc (New Directions in Japanese Cinema): Young Filmmakers Development Project
The next four short films were produced in 2023 in a government-funded project to support the careers of new directors. Each of these directors has already made award-winning films that have been picked up by small festivals.

Synopsis: Kenichi is a young boy who is abused by his mother Hiroko. One day, after a bad experience, Kenichi comes to his senses and finds Hiroko lying motionless on the floor and she is taken to a hospital. After returning home in a stupor, Kenichi struggles to fall asleep. This is when he hears the sobs of a girl. When he looks, he meets a strange girl crying at the kitchen door.
