Haruhiko Daishima has made a number of documentaries about protest movements, specifically surrounding Narita airport and student anti-war protests in the 197os. Whiplash of the Dead was his last work and it looked at the death of an activist in 1967 at a Haneda Airport anti-war protests.
Synopsis: In 1972, at the end of the student movement, Daizaburo Kawaguchi, a sophomore in the first department of literature at Waseda University, was lynched by members of extreme leftist factions.
Daishima’s film looks at what happened when students turned on each other in a particularly dark chapter. It has been split into two parts with a documentary complimented by dramatic sections which featur Ayumi Mochizuki (5 Million Dollar Life, Solomon’s Perjury 1 + 2). This documentary, based on Takeshi Hida’s award-winning reportage, presents a three-dimensional portrayal of the truth by interweaving testimonies of people who knew Kawaguchi and intellectuals such as Akira Ikegami and Masaru Sato, with dramatic reconstructions.
