Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s novel “Manji” has been adapted for him before – Yasuz Masumura’s version is utterly absorbing – and it gets adapted again, set in the present day and with the genders of the characters swapped.
Synopsis: Sonoda, unable to give up his dream of becoming an artist, quits his job as a salaryman and begins attending an art school with the support of his wife Yayoi, a lawyer. While at school, Sonoda begins to become interested in a handsome young man named Hikari and invites him to his home to act as a model for his sketches. An illicit sexual affair takes place and this affects Sonoda’s relationship with Yayoi but then he discovers that Hikari has a fiancée…

A adaptation of the novelist Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s “Chijin no Ai” sets the story in modern times and reverses the genders of the two main characters.
Synopsis: A teacher named Naomi meets a younger man named Yuzuru sitting by the side of the road and feels sorry for him because he resembles an abandoned cat. She takes him in and begins to “raise” him out of pity and with little expectation of a physical relationship but she soon begins to fall for his seductive and wild charms and a masochistic relationship ensues…
