Director Atsunori Kawamura has tracked the activities of veteran photographer Hiromi Nagakura in Afghanistan in a number of documentaries for TV. This documentary will be at the Tokyo Photographic Museum and a number of mini theatres over the autumn.
Synopsis: Hiromi Nagakura, a veteran photographer who has worked around the world, is the subject of this documentary which looks at his ties to Afghanistan. Those ties began in 1983 when he met and got to know a resistance leader named Masood. Even after Masood’s assassination at the hands of Islamic extremists in 2001, Nagakura kept visiting. One reason was a small mountain school established by Masood in his hometown in the Pansir Valley. Nagakura established an NGO to support that school and goes there every year to record the children’s growth.

Synopsis: Maruki Iri and Maruki Toshi are painters who have created works based on “The Battle of Okinawa,” “The Atomic Bomb,” “The Nanking Massacre,” and “Auschwitz”. Their preparation included listening to the testimonies of those who had experienced the war and visiting locations. This documentary specifically looks at their Okinawa work.
