The otome game “Uta no Prince Sama ♪” debuted on the PSP in 2010 before getting an anime adaptation in 2011. A decade on and the franchise is celebrating making it this far. There has already been one movie adaptation (back in 2019). This year there is a special and this movie released.

Synopsis: The story takes place in a school for unique people who aim to be idols. Lessons are focused on making the best musical performance so expect lots of singing and dancing and high-quality stage production. The seven-member idol group “ST☆RISH” perform. To make this film, live performances were created and animated.

This is based on a female manga-ka’s personal experience in the industry as she tries to break in. Yasuna Aoyama, a gravure model and race queen, takes the lead. It looks like a depressing Bakuman.

Synopsis: Kaho has always aimed to be a manga ever since she was a little girl living in a rural area. When in high school, she submits her manga to a magazine only for an editor to call back with the shocking demand that she has to have sex with him if she wants to be published.

A year after this incident, Kaho graduates from high school and moves to Tokyo where she gets work as an assistant of a professional artist to learn the ropes. This education entails both drawing and getting to grips with fellow artists with nefarious minds and it is tough but love comes in the form of Minami, a kind young man who shares her ambitions. Kaho has a lot to work for now!

Shinji Imaoka of Reiko and the Dolphins (2019) and Far Away, Further Away (2022) is releasing a lot of indie films this year and gives us a coming-of-age drama that stars Yuki Kamiosako (Spaghetti Code Love) and Amon Hirai (On the Edge of Their Seats, For Rei, and Melting Sounds).

Synopsis: Mai and Tomoki are two teens who attend different high schools. In the past, they were both in the same junior high school and harboured feelings for each others. The funeral of a junior high classmate brings them back together again. As they walk along the Kanda River together, they encounter strange people and events and, at a shrine, an ema (votive picture tablet) for the fulfilment of love that their deceased classmate put up. The pair head to Inokashira Park to track down the girl on the ema to convey their classmate’s feelings.

Episodes of his life are explored, including the unexplained onset of brain damage and the kidnapping of a love doll that cost him millions of yen.
