Synopsis: In 2017, actors Takayuki Yamada, Shinnosuke Abe, and film producer Chikara Ito, set up a short film production project in the form of MIRRORLIAR, a service designed to support people who aspire to become actors, film directors, and so forth. This is Season 1 of “MIRRORLIAR FILMS,” an omnibus of short films produced by a total of 36 actors, film directors, cartoonists, and other filmmakers. The theme of “change” runs through each story. The directors of the shorts include Masaharu Take (100 Yen Love), Yuka Eda of (Girls’ Encounter), Nobuhiro Yamashita (The Drudgery Train), actors Masanobu Ando and Ayaka Miyoshi.
酔いどれ東京ダンスミュージック 「Yoidore Tōkyō dansumyūjikku」

This documentary was conceived as director Yui Nagase’s graduation project at Tokyo University of the Arts and completed it after graduation
Synopsis: Hironori Otsuki is an office worker and a musician and alcohol plays a part in his onstage persona and off the stage, too. These dramatic contrasts are recorded in a documentary capturing his daily life as director Yui Nagase gives a multifaceted picture of the man. To this end, the filmmakers also interviewed his musician friends as well as his ex-wife and daughter.

Synopsis: Director Akiyoshi Imazeki – Klevani: Ai no Tunnel (2014) – had recently been shooting films overseas – Laika (2017) – but returned to Japan to shoot this when the Coronavirus pandemic hit. The film depicts daily life in the pandemic, a time which he depicts as shrouded in darkness and otherworldly, as if enveloped in moonlit images in what amounts to a visual poem that combines images, music, and dialogue that sounds as if the characters are reciting a poem.

Synopsis: This is a nostalgic fantasy with poetic black-and-white images and unique characters depicting the emotional struggle of a girl who feels suffocated by living in a heavy and cold world. Actress Serena Motola and Paul Lazar, a French musician who participates in Cirque du Soleil as a violinist and music director, were filmed on rare 8mm film to recreate the unique texture of analogue film.

Synopsis: This is a documentary about Yamaga Yoshiyuki, a biwa player who lived through the Taisho, Showa and Heisei eras. Born in 1901 as the third son of a farmer in Kumamoto Prefecture, Yamaga lost the sight in his left eye at the age of four, and became a biwa master at the age of 22. This film, which documents his last years of active performance, has won many awards.

A coming-of-age short film by Yuka Eda, the up-and-coming director of Girls’ Encounter, 21st Century Girl, and Mirrorliar Films, was inspired by the music of singer-songwriter Karin.
Synopsis: The film depicts Aki, an adolescent boy who is unsure of his gender identity, as he spends his days with Kiita, a girl he met at his new school, and comes to terms with the stagnation in his heart. It is shot with fresh and ephemeral images and a story that leaves room for interpretation.
