Synopsis: A documentary about 67-year-old Keiko Hayashi, a woman who lives in Kumamoto Prefecture. She might appear normal but her family was one of many to lose a relative to North Korea. In 1960, her beloved older sister, Aiko, moved there with her Korean husband. Once there, Aiko sent letters back home, many urgent requests for money and aid. As the relationship between Japan and North Korea worsened, the two sisters lost track of each other. Synopsis: Director Ryuta Hayashi is a a fourth-generation overseas Chinese whose family has deep links with Yokohama Chinatown, home to one of the largest Chinese communities in Japan with 160 years of history. Part of this history is the 1952 “School Incident” at Yokohama Chinese School, in which a teacher was expelled from the school for supporting Mao Zedong. This led to a long-lasting conflict between the school and the Overseas Chinese Association. Hayashi’s own father played a part, which he discovers after encountering a photograph of his father, a former Red Guardsman. Their story is just one of many of overseas Chinese who have been at the mercy of international politics, conflict, and the desire for coexistence.
